Quick Answer
Central Florida’s growth is happening on a ring of secondary hubs around Orlando: Lakeland and Winter Haven, Kissimmee’s NeoCity, Sanford and Lake Mary, Ocala, and The Villages. Rent a car, plan your loop around I-4, I-75, Florida’s Turnpike and SR 429, and pick your airport by the first hub you visit, not by habit. In fall 2026, the World Equestrian Center’s show calendar is the event most likely to fill rooms off the main corridor.
Why a Circuit, Not a City
Most business trips to this region land at Orlando International and never leave the I-Drive and downtown orbit. Orlando has its own FAN guide for that. This one is for the traveler whose meetings are with a distribution center in Auburndale, a chip lab in Kissimmee, a call center campus in Lake Mary, a horse farm outside Ocala, or a hospital system chasing retirees in Sumter County.
These places sit 30 to 100 miles apart, with no train or single airport tying them together. Treat the trip as a loop, sequence it so you never double back through the I-4 core at rush hour, and you can cover three or four hubs in two days.
Drive Times on the Circuit
The table below gives typical off-peak drive times between the main stops. Add 30 to 50 percent at rush hour on I-4, and more on Friday afternoons when Tampa and Orlando traffic merges in Polk County.
| Leg | Main Route | Typical Time |
| Lakeland to Winter Haven | US 92 / SR 540 | 25–30 min |
| Lakeland to Kissimmee | I-4 east | 50–60 min |
| Winter Haven to Kissimmee | US 27 / I-4 | 45–55 min |
| Kissimmee to Lake Mary | SR 417 (toll) | 45–55 min |
| Lake Mary to Sanford | I-4 / SR 46 | 15–20 min |
| Sanford to The Villages | SR 429 / SR 453 / US 441 | 75–90 min |
| The Villages to Ocala (WEC) | I-75 north | 40–50 min |
| Ocala to Lakeland | I-75 / I-4 or Turnpike | 1 hr 45 min–2 hr |
Estimates for planning only; check live traffic before you leave.
Roads: How to Move Between Hubs
I-4
I-4 is the spine of the region and its biggest time risk. The stretch through Polk and Osceola counties is under heavy construction under the state’s Moving I-4 Forward program. New lanes between US 27 in Polk County and World Drive in Osceola opened in spring 2025, eight months ahead of schedule, according to FDOT. More work is coming. In April 2026, Lane Construction was named the preferred team for a $582 million design-build contract on a 3.1-mile Osceola segment near ChampionsGate. FDOT’s longer-range plan adds express lanes along the 14 miles from US 27 to World Center Drive.
Expect lane shifts and nighttime closures between Lakeland and the Osceola line, and leave earlier than the app suggests.
SR 429 and SR 417
These two toll roads are how you skip the Orlando core. The Wekiva Parkway, the final piece of SR 429, opened to I-4 in Sanford in January 2024, so you can now run from Four Corners near the Polk line to Sanford on one expressway. SR 417 does the same on the east side, linking Kissimmee to Seminole County.
For Kissimmee to Lake Mary, SR 417 is usually the better call. For Sanford to The Villages, take SR 429 west, then SR 453 near Sorrento toward US 441. Both roads are all-electronic, so get a SunPass or activate your rental car’s toll program.
I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike
I-75 handles the Ocala and Villages end of the loop. Florida’s Turnpike splits off I-75 at Wildwood and runs southeast through Lake County toward Orlando and Kissimmee. That junction matters: AdventHealth’s planned hospital at Legacy Place sits along the Turnpike in The Villages area. For an Ocala-to-Lakeland return, compare I-75 south to I-4 against the Turnpike and Polk Parkway; on a busy afternoon the Tampa end of I-4 can tip the balance.
SR 570, the Polk Parkway
The Polk Parkway (SR 570) is a toll loop around Lakeland’s south side. It is the fastest way between the I-4 interchanges, Lakeland Linder International Airport, Florida Polytechnic University and the SunTrax test site, which sits next to the parkway in Auburndale. Use it instead of surface streets through Lakeland.
Which Airport for Which Hub
There is no single right airport. Pick based on your first stop, then fly out of the airport nearest your last one if one-way fares allow.
| Hub | Best Commercial Airport | Notes |
| Lakeland / Winter Haven | Tampa Intl (TPA) or MCO | Lakeland Linder has Avelo only |
| Kissimmee / NeoCity | MCO | Shortest airport run on the loop |
| Sanford / Lake Mary | Orlando Sanford (SFB) | Mostly Allegiant |
| The Villages / Lake | MCO | Gainesville (GNV) also works |
| Ocala / Marion | Gainesville (GNV) or MCO | Ocala Intl has no airline service |
Lakeland Linder International (LAL)
Lakeland Linder is more important for cargo and government aviation than for passengers. It is Amazon Air’s Southeast regional air cargo hub, which began operating in July 2020. It is also home to NOAA’s Aircraft Operations Center, which bases the federal Hurricane Hunter fleet. Avelo Airlines is the only passenger carrier, with routes that include Atlanta, Nashville, New Haven, Wilmington (Del.) and San Juan; check whether your origin city is on the list. Everyone else should fly into Tampa or Orlando and drive.
Orlando Sanford International (SFB)
SFB handled about 3.1 million passengers in 2025 and ranked as the FAA’s 19th-busiest U.S. airport. Allegiant dominates the schedule. In August 2026 it announced new nonstops to Boston, Providence and Grand Forks starting in February 2027. For Lake Mary meetings, SFB is the closest commercial field by a wide margin. Note that the airport has runway, ramp and parking work underway, with completion planned for late 2026.
Ocala and The Villages
Ocala International handles corporate jets and general aviation, but no airline has flown there since 1987. Business aviation customers heading to the World Equestrian Center use it. Everyone else flies into Gainesville, roughly 30 miles north of the Ocala airport, or MCO.
Stop One: Lakeland and Polk County
What Drives It
Polk County sits between the Tampa and Orlando metros, and that position explains its economy. It is a logistics county first. Amazon, Walmart, Medline, Saddle Creek and Quaker/Gatorade have run large distribution operations in Lakeland, Davenport and Auburndale for years. The newest name is Chick-fil-A, which plans a $150 million, roughly 244,000-square-foot distribution center in Winter Haven with more than 180 jobs, expected in 2027, according to the Business Observer.
The anchor employer is Publix Super Markets, headquartered in Lakeland. The employee-owned chain reported $63.2 billion in 2025 revenue and runs about 1,440 stores across eight Southeastern states. If you are in grocery, food manufacturing, packaging or retail technology, a Lakeland meeting is often a Publix-adjacent meeting.
Florida Poly and SunTrax
Florida Polytechnic University sits near I-4 on Lakeland’s east side. Its Santiago Calatrava-designed Innovation, Science and Technology Building is the most recognizable piece of architecture on the whole loop. The state’s STEM-only university reported about 1,880 students in spring 2026.
A few miles east, in Auburndale, is SunTrax. FDOT built it with Florida Poly as a 400-acre site with a 2.25-mile oval track for tolling, connected-vehicle and autonomous-vehicle testing. In August 2026, FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue announced SunTrax Air, with two new vertiports for testing advanced air mobility aircraft. Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tesla, Waymo and BEEP are working with the state at the site. If you sell sensors, tolling systems, drones or aviation software, this is a visit worth requesting.
Where to Base
Downtown Lakeland, around Lake Mirror and Munn Park, has the walkable restaurants. The I-4 interchanges north of town suit early starts at warehouse sites.
Stop Two: Winter Haven
Winter Haven, Polk County’s second city with about 49,000 people at the 2020 census, is where George Jenkins opened the first Publix in 1930. Today it is better known for Legoland Florida and its Chain of Lakes. For business travelers, the draw is industrial land on the city’s edge, including the Central Florida Integrated Logistics Park where Chick-fil-A is building. Gilbert Airport handles general aviation. Treat Winter Haven as a stop, not a base.
Stop Three: Kissimmee and NeoCity
The Semiconductor Bet
Osceola County has spent more than a decade trying to turn NeoCity, a 500-acre technology district in Kissimmee, into a semiconductor cluster. The core is the Center for NeoVation, which houses SkyWater Florida and imec. In March 2026, county and state officials broke ground on a 30,000-square-foot multi-use lab with wet, dry and cryogenic space. The project costs $22 million, including a $17.5 million state Job Growth Grant.
The tenant list is getting more international. In August 2026, the Osceola County Commission approved a 36-month lease for Belgium-based Magics Technologies, which makes radiation-hardened microchips, for its U.S. office. The same report said construction of a global headquarters for South Korea’s ELSPES is expected to begin in January. A NeoCity Center with restaurants and a hotel has been approved but not built, so for now plan to eat and sleep elsewhere.
Practical Notes
NeoCity is closer to MCO than anything else on this loop, making it a good first or last stop. Avoid US 192 through the tourist strip at midday. SunRail serves Kissimmee and Poinciana on weekdays, but stations are not close enough to NeoCity to replace a car.
Stop Four: Sanford and Lake Mary
Seminole’s Office Market
Lake Mary is Central Florida’s suburban office address. Its corporate parks along International Parkway and Lake Mary Boulevard house back-office, finance, insurance and customer-experience operations. The newest headline is Concentrix, which in August 2026 announced more than 470 new jobs at 285 International Parkway to support two new B2B customer contracts. The company calls Lake Mary its largest site.
Lake Mary also has the most Class A office space of any Seminole County city, according to the county.
Sanford
Sanford adds the airport, a restored riverfront downtown on Lake Monroe, and the northern end of the SR 429 beltway. SunRail stops in both Sanford and Lake Mary on weekdays, running roughly 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. It is the one place on the loop where rail is practical, since a Lake Mary hotel near the station can connect you to downtown Orlando meetings.
Stay in Lake Mary for office-park meetings and early SFB departures. Downtown Sanford is the better dinner choice.
Stop Five: The Villages, Sumter and Lake County
The Villages is the retirement economy at industrial scale. Census estimates showed the Villages-Wildwood area grew nearly 5 percent between 2022 and 2023 to more than 151,500 residents, making it the fastest-growing metro in the nation. Health care is the business story. UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital, with 315 beds, opened in 2022. In July 2026 AdventHealth announced plans for an 80-bed hospital on 25 acres anchoring Legacy Place, a 700-acre mixed-use development along Florida’s Turnpike. Construction is expected to start in 2027, with opening projected for 2030.
If you sell into senior housing, health systems, home care or financial planning, this is the stop. Much of The Villages runs on golf-cart paths, and dinner hours run early, so book business dinners for 5:30 or 6 p.m. In Lake County, Mount Dora is the most pleasant overnight between Sanford and The Villages.
Stop Six: Ocala and Marion County
Horses and Warehouses
Ocala has two economies that share I-75. The first is horses. A 2024 economic impact study funded by the Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association put Marion County’s equine industry at $4.3 billion, about 28,500 jobs and some 75,000 horses, the most of any U.S. county. The county markets itself as the Horse Capital of the World.
The second is distribution. FedEx Ground, Chewy, AutoZone and Dollar Tree have all announced regional distribution or fulfillment operations around Ocala, drawn by I-75 and US 27 access to most of Florida’s population. Several of those projects date to the 2015 to 2020 period, so check current status before you plan a visit around any single one.
World Equestrian Center
The World Equestrian Center, at 1750 NW 80th Ave. west of I-75, bills itself as the largest equestrian complex in the United States. It has two on-site hotels, The Equestrian Hotel and The Riding Academy Hotel, plus restaurants that host live music most weekends. During a big show week, those rooms go first. Ocala’s hotels along I-75 at SR 200 and SR 40 absorb the overflow.
Fall 2026 Events on the Loop
These are the confirmed fall dates most likely to affect a business trip in the region, mostly at WEC. Sun ’n Fun, Lakeland’s big aviation event, is in spring and is not on this list.
| Event | Place | 2026 Dates |
| Ocala Fall Series, October II | WEC, Ocala | Oct. 7–11 |
| WEC October Dressage | WEC, Ocala | Starts Oct. 23 |
| Mount Dora Craft Fair | Downtown Mount Dora | Oct. 24–25* |
| November Show Series (2 weeks) | WEC, Ocala | Nov. 4–15 |
| WEC Vaulting Premiere | WEC, Ocala | Starts Nov. 27 |
| December Series, CSI3/CSI4 | WEC, Ocala | Dec. 1–13 |
*From a third-party event listing; confirm with Visit Mount Dora.
The December Series is the one to watch: its second week adds CSI4* international jumping for the first time, and a $120,000 grand prix is set for Dec. 5. Expect tight Ocala hotels. Skip Mount Dora on fair weekend.
Weather and Timing
Fall is the best season for this loop, but not a cool one. Expect highs in the 80s through October, easing toward the 70s by late November. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30; inland, the main risks are flooded roads and outages. Pack a light layer for early mornings at the Ocala barns.
Brian’s Take
When I managed money, I learned that the best data about a region rarely came from its headline city. It came from where capital was actually being deployed. In Central Florida, that is the ring in this guide: a $150 million distribution center in Winter Haven, a $22 million chip lab in Kissimmee, 470 new jobs in a Lake Mary office park, a hospital planned for the nation’s fastest-growing metro, and a $4.3 billion horse economy in Marion County. None of it depends on theme park attendance.
If you do business here, drive the loop once a year. The warehouses rising along I-4, the empty lots at NeoCity and the cart traffic in The Villages will teach you more than a week of conference panels. Just leave I-4 alone at 5 p.m.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best airport for a business trip to Lakeland?
Tampa International or Orlando International, depending on where your meetings fall in Polk County. Lakeland Linder has passenger service only from Avelo Airlines, so it helps only if your origin is on Avelo’s route map.
Can I do a Central Florida hub tour without a car?
No. SunRail covers Sanford, Lake Mary and Kissimmee on weekdays, but not Lakeland, Ocala or The Villages. Rent a car and get a toll pass.
How do I avoid I-4 between Kissimmee and Sanford?
Take SR 417 on the east side or SR 429 on the west side. Both are all-electronic toll roads, and SR 429 now runs continuously from the Four Corners area to I-4 in Sanford after the Wekiva Parkway was completed in January 2024.
What is NeoCity?
A 500-acre Osceola County technology district in Kissimmee focused on semiconductors. SkyWater Florida and imec work at its Center for NeoVation, and a 30,000-square-foot lab broke ground in March 2026.
When are the big World Equestrian Center shows in fall 2026?
The October II Fall Series runs Oct. 7–11, the November Show Series runs Nov. 4–15, and the December Series runs Dec. 1–13 with international CSI3* and CSI4* jumping. Book Ocala hotels early for December.
Is The Villages worth a business trip?
Yes, for health care, senior living or consumer services. The area topped 151,500 residents in 2023, and AdventHealth plans an 80-bed hospital there by 2030.
Where is SunTrax and can I visit?
SunTrax is an FDOT test facility in Auburndale, next to the Polk Parkway, built with Florida Polytechnic University. It is a controlled testing site, so visits require arrangement through FDOT or a testing partner.
What should I expect for fall weather in Central Florida?
Highs in the 80s through October, milder by late November. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.
